About Keswick in the northern English Lake District...
Keswick is one of the oldest settlements in Cumbria with archaeological
evidence from the nearby Castlerigg Stone Circle placing it
in the realm of Neolithic man, around four thousand years
ago.
Since then the town has been a market town trading in goods
from sheep farms based on the Cumbrian fells surrounding Keswick
and still retains much of it's market town charm.
From the late 1800's with the advent of the Victorian tourism
trade, the town became popular with visitors from all around
the country especially drawn by it's tranquil setting and
easy access to Derwentwater Lake. Today the lake is still
a popular draw especially during the Summer months when the
boats ride across and around the lake allowing tourists to
see the full splendour of the area.
There are many attractions aside Dewentwater including the
Cars of the
Stars museum where visitors can see many of the cars featured
in the films from James Bond to Thunderbirds and Only Fools
& Horses. Plus there's there world famous Keswick
Cumberland Pencil Museum which takes visitors through
the history of the pencil factory and how the pencils are
actually made.
Access to Keswick is easy either from the M6 motorway heading
west from Junction 40 (Penrith) or through the central Lake
District on the A591 from Kendal (J37 M6) past Windermere,
Ambleside and Grasmere.
